Piano and Organ Lessons
with Marti Magnussen

I offer private piano and organ lessons in the Winston, Myrtle Creek, Roseburg, Oakland, and surrounding areas.

General Information

I teach privately in my home studio in Winston, OR. Children and adults are welcome on all skill levels. Most students desire a 30 or 45 minute weekly lesson. Learning to play the piano and organ are a life-enriching activity that can be enjoyed throughout a lifetime. Students are encouraged to participate in recitals and competitions (as desired), and festivals.

Why Study Music

Music is fun and life enriching both for the performer and the listener. It has been proven to improve academic performance in disciplines not directly related to music. Through studies it has been shown to enhance children’s reasoning skills, reading abilities, math skills, and academic performance.

Value of Music

The study of music touches everything else in life. It encourages self esteem and self discipline as well as an artistic sensibility and intellect. There is one thing I can guarantee: the study of music makes one’s life better.

Musical education is an investment in a lifetime of enjoying music. An appreciation for and understanding of music cultivates both creative and intellectual growth.

Parents

Parental responsibility only BEGINS with paying for lessons. Praise and encouragement are the parent’s greatest tools in helping a young musician. Sit down and listen to your child’s practice immediately following their lessons. Then listen again just before the next lesson. Comment upon the improvement you hear.

Be certain that your piano is in good condition. It is very difficult to enjoy playing on an out of tune instrument. A parallel experience might be riding your bicycle with a flat tire. It would work, but would you enjoy it?

Parents are always encouraged to attend lessons and be a part of their child’s learning experience. Please feel free to call me anytime with questions or concerns. I will always try and answer any questions you may have. We both have the same goal in mind and that is to teach your child to love music and play the piano.

Commitment/Practice

The study of music is rewarding and enjoyable, but it is also work! As you know, your child will only be as committed as you are. To insure that you get your money’s worth out of piano lessons, I need parents’ help to motivate and support students, and to make music study a productive experience.

PRACTICE: A family responsibility

To insure optimal progress, sufficient practice time must be set aside.

It is important to find a time when it is relatively quiet in the home for effective learning. Please respect your child’s practice by eliminating all distracting elements, such as TV, stereos and friends. The emphasis needs to be on mind spent, not only time spent.

Learning to play the piano or the organ is an on-going endeavor, which requires dedication and discipline on the part of the student.

Please remember that, although I want to make studying music enjoyable for your child, studying music also involves work. Regular practice is essential for any child’s progress, no matter how naturally gifted he or she may be.

A few minutes of daily practice will obtain MUCH better results than a few hours on one or two days.

Students who are going to go to the time and expense of taking lessons should plan to practice daily.

Daily, uninterrupted practice is necessary in order to make progress in piano. There is no magic. It takes regular practice. I will make sure each child leaves after each lesson understanding the assignment and how to practice it.

Rates & Payment

I charge $50.00 per month for a weekly half hour lesson and $75.00 per month for a weekly 45 minute lesson. I encourage the 45 minute lessons for most students over 10 years of age. The younger child may have a difficult time concentrating for the more lengthy lessons.

Payment for the lessons is by the month in advance and due on the first lesson of every month. Concerning missed and cancelled lessons, I will attempt to makeup the lesson at a later time in the week or month as long as I am notified that the student will not be at the lesson. In the event that I am not notified in advance the lesson will be forfeited.
